London Concert at St. Paul’s Knightsbridge 2009
On Saturday 5 December, the chapel choirs enjoyed great success in their end of term London concert, joining the girls choir and mixed student choirs of St. Catharine's College, Cambridge at St. Paul's Church in Knightsbridge. The large and appreciative audience, including the Provost of Worcester and Master of St. Catharine's, were treated to an opening fanfare, for trumpet and organ, written especially for the occasion by Prof. Robert Saxton, Fellow of Worcester College and an alumnus of St. Catharine's (Worcester's sister college).
The Worcester College Choirs began the choral items with Michael Head's 'Ther Little Road to Bethlehem' and other highlights included James Macmillan's sonorous 'In Splendoribus' for choir and trumpet. St. Catharine's choirs took us back to the Tudor period with Tallis's 'O Nata Lux' and Parsons's wonderful 'Ave Maria', before performing another world premiere by a St. Catharine's alumnus, Nigel Hess's exuberant 'Benedictus' for piano and choir. The first half
ended with some audience participation (singing!) in a carol by Judith Weir.
The second half comprised of Britten's 'A Ceremony of Carols' performed by both college chapel choirs and interspersed with organ interludes played by Worcester College Director of Chapel Music, Stephen Farr.
The Worcester choirs were also expertly directed by our tireless organ scholars, Thomas Allery and Kathleen McDermott and the St. Cats. choirs were under the baton of Dr. Edward Wickham, their Director of Music. All in all, the standards were wonderfully high and worthy of the illustrious London venue. Profits raised go to Great Ormond Street Hospital, and it is hoped that such an occassion, and collaboration, can happen again in the future. Many thanks to all who worked so hard to make it such a success.
