Services

The services at Worcester College are conducted according to the rites of the Church of England but anyone of whatever faith is welcome to attend, and Christians of all denominations are able to receive communion. The boys and gentlemen sing Evensong on a Sunday and Tuesday and the mixed choir sing on a Monday and Thursday during term time.

All the services are open to the public.

College Evensong

This is the major service of the week and an important part of College tradition. The boys and gentlemen of the choir sing the service, and it consists of a series of responses, a psalm, readings from the Old and New Testaments, an anthem, prayers and a sermon. The preachers come from many walks of life and often give stimulating and entertaining addresses. During Hilary Term there is a sermon series, which this year was on the seven deadly sins. The service usually lasts an hour and there is opportunity to meet the preacher over a glass of sherry in the Memorial Room afterwards.

Choral Evensong

On a Monday and a Tuesday evening at 6.15 pm the choir sing the evening office of Evensong. This is a shortened version of the College Evensong on the Sunday and does not contain a sermon.

Sung Eucharist

The Eucharist or Holy Communion or the Mass is celebrated every Thursday during term time at 6.00 pm. This central act of worship by the Christian Church consists of Bible readings, a homily, prayers and the distribution of the body and blood of Christ. The mixed choir sing parts of the service but there are also hymns for everyone to join in. The sacrament is reserved in the Chapel for devotion and available for anyone to receive at another occasion - please contact the Chaplain to arrange this.

Food for thought, for the senses and for the soul.

Compline

The ancient monastic night time office of Compline is sung by a member of the choir every Wednesday night at 9 pm in the Chapel. A great way to unwind and find some inner peace at the end of a busy day.
