A Robin Milford Weekend in Oxford

The Chapel and Choir are delighted to announce a weekend of events celebrating the life and work of the English composer Robin Milford, in partnership with the Robin Milford Trust.

A Robin Milford Weekend at Oxford will take place on 21 and 22 October in Worcester College, and in St. Peter’s College Chapel. The weekend will contain recitals, concerts, and a service in the college chapel, and is designed to showcase the wonderful and varied compositional output of Robin Milford and his contemporaries.

Robin Milford (1903 – 59) was an English composer who studied with Holst and Vaughan Williams. His individual and unique compositional voice is characterised by honest word setting and lyrical descriptive lines. He belongs to the twentieth-century English compositional school and counted Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gerald Finzi amongst his closest friends. Milford’s compositional output is extremely varied, encompassing English song, piano and choral works, organ works, orchestral pieces, and works for children’s choirs.

As part of the weekend’s celebrations, we will hear performances of Milford’s music and also of his contemporaries and friends including Edmund Rubbra, Vaughan Williams, and Finzi.

The final events of the weekend will be an organ recital of Milford’s organ works given by Worcester’s organ scholars Alexander Palotai and Julia Alsop, followed by Choral Evensong at 5:15.
